The Walking Dead TPB Collections Digitally Half Off

If you haven’t been under a rock, you know about The Walking Dead and the huge success it’s had. If you are a reader of this site, you know we are huge fans of both the comic (by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn) and the TV show on AMC. That makes today your lucky day, as Volumes 1 – 11 are on sale for $6 per collection, a savings of 50%. Get over to comiXology and download these bad boys for 1/3 less than you would buy them in a store, and save the planet at the same time (less dead trees). Sale lasts through 11 pm EST March 8, 2011, so get your undead asses moving!

Current Issue Digital Comics

You know how frustrating it is to fire up any current comics app on the iPad or iPhone and browse through the “New” comics, only to find things that came out years and years ago? The revolution is now, comic publishers, and we want our current run issues on our electronic devices now. Here’s what we found in a quick review of titles that were “New” on February 9, 2011. This is a list of the ones that actually were new in print at the same time:

Deus Ex #1
Justice League Generation Lost #19

That’s out of a list of 30 “New” comics in the DC comic store, powered by comiXology.

Marvel has a total number of 42 comics listed in the February 15, 2011 “New” section in their own comiXology app. Not ONE of them is actually a current issue comparable to the print comics we can find in a comics store.

Let’s also notice that all these comics labeled “new” that are indeed NOT new are retailing for $1.99 to $2.99, depending on how old they actually are. Why would I buy a $3 comic from 2006 when I can spend the same amount in a comic shop getting the current stories from the artists and writers that I want?

The sad fact is that both of these major comic publishers have only chosen to dip their feet into the digital comics world. I’m betting they aren’t seeing much in the way of returns. I hope that doesn’t stop them from re-thinking their current issue practices. I understand that they want to charge $3 an issue. I’m ok with that. I’m willing to pay $3 an issue, but I want to be able to do it on my iPad or my computer. I don’t want my home to be full of plastic tubs full of printed comics anymore. I want the same comics that are available to my local comics shop to be available to me in my comics app. There will still be similar numbers of people buying paper comics, because they’re the collectors anyway. Let those of us who want to go digital actually. GO. DIGITAL.

‘Nuff said.

Free Comics Friday 2/5/10

You know what a comic is, right? Images, words, etc. It’s fairly easy to get these comics online, especially if you’re a publisher. So, every Friday, we’re going to bring you a bunch of free issues that you can download or read online, legal and easy, right from the publishers’ own sites, blogs and popular series.

If you’re a comics creator, feel free to hit us with your own work and we’ll get it out to all our rabid fans. All three of them! Hah. So, here’s your first Free Comic Friday. This week? We’re focusing on free digital comics on the iPhone and iPod Touch:

Box 13

This one’s free on your iPhone, and you can read it online right from comixology’s site. There are currently nine issues in the queue, just waiting for you to download or click your way through.

Writer: David Gallaher
Art By: Steve Ellis

A reimagining of the popular radio serial, BOX 13 follows the harrowing adventures of author Dan Holiday as he unlocks clue to his past and his very identity.
Investigative author Dan Holiday has spent the last several years of his life researching the secrets behind the MKULTRA project. His latest book has brought him a degree of notoriety around the country and around the world. And, during his recent book tour – Dan discovers something that will change his life forever. Join him as he learns what lurks inside Box 13.

Bardo

Get a sneak 8-page look into this fascinating series named for a word that means literally “intermediate state” – also translated as “transitional state” or “in-between state.” The first issue is also available, for only $.99.

Cover By: Kate Hockstein
Writer: Deegan Winters
Art By: Simon Winheld
Fifteen year old Caleb Monroe’s violent death hurtles him into the Bardo realm where his fears and passions take the form of enemies and allies, and the only way to break free from the Mindscape’s dark entanglements is to unravel the mind that created them. “Those who fear the feeling are soon to feel their fearing, and those whose fear is felt are dealt a healthy dealing.” – The words of Lord Mallux.

The Hunter #1

The featured free comic on Panelfly at this point in time, released on September 2, 2009, coming in at 67 pages. It tells the story of Gabriel Mot, a CIA agent with extraordinary powers, and the start of his investigation into four major terror attacks on America.
Writer: Adam Hamdy
Artist David Golding

Elephantmen #1:

Another Panelfly free comic, this one’s hard to pass up. They were genetically engineered to be suprahuman weapons of mass destruction, but now they must walk amongst the people they were created to destroy. Elephantmen is an American ongoing monthly comic book published by Image Comics and written by Richard Starkings with art by Moritat and a number of other artists. Issue #1 was released in July 2006.
