Bolt Creative and Ape Entertainment are bringing their hit iPhone game to pen and paper. A four-issue miniseries is planned to arrive in a digital form first, and then to your local comic store shortly after. It is hard to see how they will make a story based on a game of nothing more than killing as many Pygmies as one can. We will keep this on our radar and report back on if this is worth the pickup or a toss into the piranha infested seas.

WebComic: The Blind Fisherman / Personal Demons
Writer: Bryn Colvin
Artist: Thomas Brown
One of the greatest things about Webcomics is there are so many hidden gems out there. This week’s Webcomic took me by surprise. On this adventure we take a trip down the road of fantasy and magic. We bring you The Blind Fisherman / Personal Demons. This comic combo was started back in September of 2009 by Bryn Colvin and Thomas Brown. Ever since we have been treated to a new panel every week.
The first thing that really caught me off guard on this comic was the artwork. The whole series looks like it was drawn on a sketchpad with pencils and charcoal. Many times it felt like I was looking at Thomas Brown’s personal sketchpad. So many comics now use photoshop and look nothing like the old school sketches from artists waiting for the bus. I am not talking stick people here, but rather a feast for the eyes that is carefully prepared and slow cooked all week.
The one aspect that is used sparingly is color. Color is used for things like a blue magical fireball or the green slime that is the blood of a demon. Due to its sparing use, it grabs your eyes with fishhook vengence. The simple blue added to a small bit of magic focuses your eyes to it. This also gives it a real feeling of power while making one ask just how powerful this little girl is.
Every once in a while we are treated to a full panel in color. When these happen we see dark rich greens and brick reds grace the canvas. These are fantastic as they not only carry the colored pencil feel, but also show off what Thomas is capable of in the world of color. Lighting techniques are used to pull the eyes around the wonderful piece of art. I would go so far as to say I would love to have this artwork proudly displayed in my office.
Of course, this comic would be nothing without a good story. The Blind Fisherman is a short story leading up to Personal Demons. This is a world full of magic and fantasy with dark themes. Personal Demons follows a little orphan girl as she learns about her magical powers. The innocence of childhood is maintained through clever and innocent one liners. The story is written as if Tim Burton lived on Sesame Street. The dark and unique fantasy world created here carries a child-like innocence in every panel, every story.
With some candy for the eyes and veggies for the brain, this is one fine Webcomic. You are not years behind, as these works of art must take tons of time, so what are you waiting for? Check out this series and maybe you will be chomping at the bit for the next update. I know I sure am.

File this headline under the “duh” column, but once we started reading the article over at gizmodo, we couldn’t stop.
Seems as if Panelfly, the makers of an iPhone comics app, are building a new comic book app for the iPad. According to the folks there and at Gizmodo, this new app is built from the ground up to take advantage of the iPad’s size and screen resolution, giving readers a slick and well-planned comics reading experience.
The author goes on to speculate on the different purchasing models (mareketing speak for we still want you to buy from us), but was unable to get the CTO and designer at Panelfly to elaborate on any subscription model.
This is just another example of a niche the iPad will fill, alongside glossy magazines and interactive media we haven’t even dreamed up, yet. Motion comic with “print” version extras, anyone? Stay tuned as we keep our eye on this one.

*UPDATE* – Since writing this article, PSBlog has updated their posting. Thanks to @starven for pointing out their bad posting.
Time to rant a bit. We at Comics Are Evil want to bring you the new releases in a timely and accurate type of fashion. This update will mark our third publishing of the PSN Comics that hit every Thursday. We have posted many more on our sister sites Games Are Evil and The Portable Gamer.
Here is the problem I have with this update. WHERE ARE THE COMIC NUMBERS? Seriously. Two Astonishing X-Men are missing numbers. Wormwood didn’t even get a number. The best yet is X-Men didn’t even merit a number for the six comics they are asking customers to buy. Sony, you have enough issues with the PSP, making crappy update posts is not helping you any.
So today I will give you two sets of updates. The first update is what the official PlayStation Blog Posted. The second set will be what we were able to dig up. Hopefully the pricing on the jumbled mess that PSBlog put out apply to what Sony really says they put out. Bad PSBlog, just bad!

Mass Effect 2 is getting praises left and right. Mass Effect: Redemption #1 follows along and sells out across the land. Have no fear though as Dark Horse is on the job and getting a second printing going. If you really can’t wait, there is always the App Store route. It is all of $0.99 (at the time of this writing it was still free) on there, and it never goes out of print! Just a thought.
Mass Effect: Redemption tells the exciting events that take place just before Mass Effect 2. Lead ME2 writer, Mac Walters, gives comic fans a taste of what gaming fans have enjoyed two games over now. The added benefit is the writing style of the comic will match the writing style of the game. Fans of both the comic and the game will get one cohesive story telling experience. It is a Win-Win!

Book: Grimm Fairy Tales: Return To Wonderland Mini-series
Publisher: Zenescope
Price: #0 – Free, #1 -#4 $0.99
Author: Raven Gregory
Art: Rich Bonk & Al Rio
Colored By: Thomas Mason & Nei Ruffino
Obtained: ComiXology on iPhone
Verdict: This is a great dark spin on the classic tale.
Background:
I was browsing through the free comics on the ComiXology store and found Alice waiting to be read. I am really stoked for the new Alice in Wonderland movie so, like a horrific scream outside my window, this peaked my interest. I downloaded the free comic, loved it, and proceeded to spend all the rest of my lunch money while lying in bed downloading the rest of the comics available.
I am panting with my frustrated urges to read the last few books; it’s that much of a page-turner. Or page tapper, in this case. I enjoyed this new take on the story so much that I came into work and told another comic fan about it. He promptly downloaded it as well. Choirs of angels began to sing.
This one’s dark. Dark like twisted black metal in a deep, dank cave You know what we mean – no kids allowed! The themes and artwork are most certainly geared towards the adult crowd. If you are looking forward to the new movie, or played the American McGee’s Alice PC game, you will love this comic.

The Story:
The free comic starts out on a mission to sink its dark fantasy teeth deep into your head and probe you with it’s tongue through the new cranial orifice it will create. Alice has come back from Wonderland and led the life of a normal woman. Alice went and got married, had some kids, and ….wait, no spoilers here!
The mini-series throws a few dark and sex type things at readers before diving head trip first down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. The story follows Alice’s daughter, Calie, through some interesting scenarios in this magical world. Interesting in a “I just took some acid and the colors on your shirt are starting to bleed” sort of a way.
New monsters and a new spin on well-known characters all make for an engaging and thoroughly tasty story. There’s no sweet an innocent here. Then again, the source material wasn’t actually sweet and innocent either, was it now?

The Artwork:
The art in this mini-series is fantastic. Rich Bonk and Al Rio invest every panel with rich, dark colors and strong line work. Each page of full, rich illustration portrays more than just the story, it immerses the reader into an experience of what Wonderland would be like had it been in some sort of Stephen King movie. The story is enjoyable, but the art and coloring takes it up a whole new, dirty notch. This is a great example of how good a comic on the iPhone can look. Seriously, where’s my freaking iPad? This comic brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “eye-candy.” You perv.
